Sado's original armored arm.

NewFoundGloryAdded by NewFoundGlory
Sado first appears as a student in Ichigo's class. A few days after Ichigo becomes a Shinigami, Sado is offered a cursed cockatiel whose previous owners have all died horrible deaths. The bird is in fact the container for the spirit of a dead child, placed there by a Hollow who uses him as bait. Sado is forced to fight the Hollow despite not being able to see it, assisted by Rukia Kuchiki. Ichigo defeats the Hollow then performs a soul burial on Yūichi Shibata. Beforehand, Sado promises that he will carry Shibata around again if they meet in Soul Society.
Later on, when Uryū Ishida duels with Ichigo, Uryū unleashes a multitude of Hollows upon the town and Sado is pressed into battle with another Hollow in order to protect Karin Kurosaki. It is this event that awakens his spiritual powers, which manifest as armor on his right arm. He is later brought to Kisuke Urahara along with Orihime to have everything about the Shinigami world explained.

Soul Society arcEdit Soul Society arc sectionEdit

After Rukia is taken back to Soul Society, Sado and Orihime Inoue are trained by Yoruichi Shihōin to consciously call upon their powers when needed. After a week, Sado leaves for Soul Society with Orihime, Uryū, Yoruichi, and Ichigo. In Rukongai, Sado is reunited with Shibata, who has not yet found his mother but is living with a "family" of non-related people. At this point, Sado fulfilled his promise, carrying the boy on his shoulder for most of the day.
Sado vs Kyōraku

GojitaAdded by Gojita
Once entering Seireitei, the group becomes separated and Sado ends up alone. Sado easily fights his way through a fair portion of the Shinigami about Soul Society, and eventually finds his way into the quarters of the 8th Division. There he meets Shunsui Kyōraku, captain of the 8th Division, who makes a flashy appearance by having his lieutenant Nanao Ise sprinkle flower petals on him. After the flashy appearance, Sado proceeds to politely ask the captain to move out of the way as he would like to avoid fighting. Kyōraku sits down, telling Sado that he also dislikes fighting but cannot let him pass and asks if Sado would pull back instead. Upon hearing that Sado would not retreat, Shunsui offers him something to drink, something Sado responds to by an outraged "No" because it is illegal for minors to drink, something Kyōraku also realizes is a problem.
After hearing that other captains are also on the move, Sado tries asking Kyōraku to move aside one more time but is refused. Sado then attacks Kyōraku who simply redirects his energy blast with his bare hand. Sado launches a series of attacks to which Kyōraku easily dodges.[10] Kyōraku tries to dissuade Sado by questioning him on his purpose and motives to continue fighting. Sado answers back, showing his determination and loyalty to his friend, Ichigo[11].
Sado's defeat by Kyōraku.

Realizing he is outmatched, Sado remembers his promise to Ichigo, and prepares to make a final move. As he runs towards the captain, Sado plans to hit him directly with a charged energy blast in his fist. Kyōraku however, having reluctantly drew his dual Zanpakutō, effortlessly defeats Sado, leaving him heavily injured.[12] Nanao Ise notices that he is still alive and planned to finish him off but is stopped by Kyōraku because of the possibility of his involvement in the murder of Sōsuke Aizen, therefore necessitating keeping Sado alive for interrogation.[13]
Following this, Sado, along with the rest of Ichigo's friends, does not actively participate in events. After being healed by the 4th Division and subsequently freed by Kenpachi Zaraki of the 11th Division, Zaraki's lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi, leads the group to the Sōkyoku where they wait as Ichigo and Byakuya Kuchiki fight. After Byakuya is defeated, the group tends to Ichigo. They then find out that the events at Soul Society were an elaborate plot masterminded by Sōsuke Aizen and confront him, but Aizen departs for Hueco Mundo. Uryū, Sado, Ichigo, and Orihime depart for the living world.

Bount arc (anime only)Edit Bount arc (anime only) sectionEdit

Note: Events occurring in this arc are only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Sado greets Ichigo in class, and Mizuiro notices that Sado and Ichigo have gotten tanner. Keigo suddenly enters the class and gets annoyed that Sado and Ichigo have gotten closer, but Ichigo hits Keigo out of annoyance. When class starts, Sado, Orihime, and Uryū notice a Hollow outside coming towards the school, but it's quickly dispatched of by Ichigo.[14]
Later at night, Sado finds Orihime training with her Shun Shun Rikka. Sado and Orihime talk, and Sado states that when he went to Soul Society, he thought he had finally found a chance to figure out his powers. Orihime states that she went because she wanted to be of use to Ichigo, but in the end she was useless. Sado tells her that she just has to keep trying, and explains that these powers of theirs were given to them by Ichigo. He states that if they're going to keep following him, they'll have to get stronger, and Sado fires off a blast of spiritual energy from his armored arm into a wall. Orihime remarks that that will cause a lot of attention, and this causes the two of them to leave. Later Sado wakes up and he senses something wrong with Orihime. He arrives at Orihime's house, along with Uryū, and he see's both Ichigo and Renji. He then sees Orihime being sucked into a gate and the gate disappears.[14]
The next day, Sado and the others discuss what happened. Sado states that he can't sense Orihime's reiatsu at all, and Renji remarks that the gate she was sucked up in looked similar to the Gates Of Hell, but that there's no way the Gates Of Hell would take a living person. Sado states that the most confusing thing is what happened earlier, which was that none of their classmates remembered who Orihime was. Ichigo states that if someone is intentionally messing with their classmates memories, then that means someone is calculating their actions. The group then decide to investigate Orihime's house one more time.[15]
Ichigo is unable to open the door to Orihime's house, so Sado decides to break in but Ichigo stops him. Uryū helps by picking the doors lock, and the group head into the house. After investigating a bit, they are able to come to the conclusion that Orihime invited someone inside her house. Renji suddenly gets a call and the person on the other line informs them that she knows of their location, and that she kidnapped Orihime. Ichigo asks for Orihime back but the person says that they first have to play a game with her. She gives them three challenges to pass, all of which involve going to various locations in Karakura Town in under three minutes, and answering the phone in that location. After passing the first two challenges, they are told to go to the Urahara Shop, and when they reach there they answer the phone and the girl tells them to head to Orihime's house at 8:00.[15]
Later that night, the group stands in front of Orihime's house, and a bright light suddenly emits from Orihime's room. The door to the house is locked again, and this time Ichigo allows Sado to break the door down. However, the door ends up opening by itself, and a confused Orihime greets the group. Orihime is shown to have zero memory of what happened, and the group decides to stay with Orihime for a bit. As they wait, the lights in the house shut off and Orihime suddenly becomes possessed. She begins choking Sado, and she eventually lets him go. Orihime then transforms into a man and the person introduces himself as Kurōdo. He then brings out his partner Noba and the two of them take Sado into the same gate that Orihime was taken into.[15]
Later, Sado is shown tied to a poll by Ririn, Kurōdo, and Noba just as his friends arrive to save him. However, Sado is used as a challenge stage for the group to go through; he is put into an hourglass and given 5 more minutes to live as sand begins rising in the hourglass. The group end up failing the challenge, but just before Sado is suffocated from the sand the hourglass breaks. Ichigo runs up to Sado to untie him, but Sado is able to easily free himself. Ichigo asks what happened while he was captured, but Sado simply remarks that there was tea. Ichigo suddenly realizes what is going on and he calls for Urahara to come out, claiming that he's the one behind all of this. Urahara does indeed come out, and it turns out that the entire time Sado was "captured" he was simply playing shogi with Ririn. After they all talk for a bit Yoruichi appears and informs the group of a new threat called the Bount.[16]
At the Urahara Shop, Sado and the rest of the group are informed about the Bount. Urahara explains that they are a small group of specialized humans such as the Quincy, and that they are able to eat and absorb human souls and, in doing so, they can live forever. They normally consume the souls of the dead, however, Yoruichi notes that in the recent case, the Bount was trying to consume a living soul, which would effectively render the human dead. Out of concern for powerful human souls such as those of Ichigo, Orihime, and Sado, Urahara assigns each of the three mod souls to each of them, as each mod soul essentially has a secondary function as a "Bount sensor, and Noba is given to Sado. Urahara suggests that the mod-souls be put into stuffed animals, so Sado later buys a stuffed animal from a crane game, and then goes back home and puts the mod-soul into the stuffed animal. However, the two simply stare at each other, and Kon suddenly appears to yell at the two of them to speak. Sado asks him what he's doing here and Kon explains that Ririn has been bossing him around too much at Ichigo's house. Kon then suggests that they head over to Orihime's house to "save" her from the other mod-soul with her.[17]
After arriving at Orihime's house they hear a scream and Kon suggests that they check it out, but Sado explains to him that peeping on others is a crime. However, he is forced to go in with Kon and they find Orihime screaming over how cute Kurōdo looks as a plushie. Kurōdo and Noba suddenly sense a Bount and they all head out to look for the Bount. After searching for a while they find a body on the ground and the body suddenly turns into dust. A Bount named Ryō Utagawa suddenly appears and informs the group that he was the one that killed the Human that just turned into dust. The Bount then leaves the area.[17]
Sado and the others eventually find Ichigo, who was just confronted by two Bount, including the one that went up to them before. As Sado mentions their confrontation with the Bount, they notice that Rukia is with Ichigo as well and they greet her. They then change locations to talk and Rukia mentions why she was sent to Karakura Town again. Rukia then notices the mod-souls and Sado shows Noba to her. A bit later, the group heads to the Kurosaki Clinic, and they say that they're going to study together. They then head into Ichigo's room and they talk about the Bount and what they can do against them. Renji suddenly runs into the Kurosaki Clinic because Rukia is here, and they continue talking about the Bount. The next day at school Keigo offers Sado a ticket to Don Kanonji's show. However, a Bount is suddenly sensed in the area and Sado runs out of school with Ichigo and the others. They eventually run into the Bount Ryō and begin battling him. As Ryō explains his power and uses snakes to attack the group, Uryū appears to assist everyone but Ryō decides to go after the Quincy because of his current lack of power.[18]
Ryō then holds a women hostage so no one can attack him, but Uryū offers to exchange himself for the women because he's the one Ryō wants. Ryō agrees to this, and after having his snake bind Uryū the Bount Yoshino Sōma appears and attacks Ryō. She then uses her doll to attack everyone else and she takes Uryū away from the area. After Orihime uses her Shun Shun Rikka to protect Sado and some others, the group decides to head after Yoshino but they're quickly stopped by Ryō. Ryō sends his snakes after them but Sado and the others easily take care of them. However, Ryō continues sending more snakes but they are quickly dispatched by Ururu, who has also appeared with Renji, Jinta, and Tessai. Ryō quickly runs away from the area and Ichigo decides to go after Yoshino, but they are unable to because she has gotten too far from them and the mod-souls can't track her reiatsu.[19]
At the Urahara Shop, Sado and the others decide that they have to find Uryū, but Urahara informs them that if they do that then they would just be doing what the enemy wants. Urahara then explains more about the Bount to the group, but as he does this Tessai suddenly runs in and states that he got a message from Uryū. The group then quickly heads to the hospital and they find Uryū resting in bed. Sado checks to see if Uryū still has his legs to make sure he isn't a ghost but Uryū assures him that he's not. Uryū then explains what happened to him and what he learned from the Bount Yoshino, and that the Bount need the Quincy for some reason. Urahara then decides to leave to come up with a plan and Sado and the others decide to see him off.[19]
The group then head back into Uryū's room and Sado and the others tell him to rest and that they'll protect him if anything happens. A bit later, Sado wonders why the Bount would need a Quincy, causing both Kon and Ririn to begin arguing about whether or not Uryū was mistaken. As night begins to fall outside, Sado remarks that there's no point in staying here if no enemies are going to attack. Later, Sado and the others try to fix a sink from overflowing and Sado remarks that it's most likely broken. Orihime then notices a noise coming from a room and she opens the door for it, only for water to flow out everywhere from it. The water eventually takes a mind of its own much to the shock of everyone and Uryū is encased in water and begins drowning. Sado tries to save him but he is unable to get rid of the water with just his hands. Ichigo then enters his Shinigami form, tells Sado to get out of the way, and uses his Zanpakutō to get rid of the water. They eventually realize that they can't stay in this room and all of them run out into the hallway.[20]
Not long after leaving the group is confronted by more water and after taking care of the water, Orihime wonders if what's attacking them is a doll. The group then heads downstairs. However, they are immediately attacked by more water downstairs and both Sado and Uryū are encased in water, causing them to begin drowning. Renji swings his Zanpakutō to get rid of the water, but the water quickly encases the two of them again. After several more attempts, the two of them are eventually saved by Rukia firing off Hadō #31. Shakkahō with an incantation at the water. However, the Kidō spell caused an alarm to go off and the group begins running away. They then find a map and begin examining it to see where they can go, and they eventually decide to take the elevator. After running around a bit though, they are confronted by Hō and Ban, the two young Bount attacking them, and they summon their twin dolls to attack them.[20]
The group immediately begins running away, and they eventually find the elevators they were looking for. However, water begins flowing out from the elevator, and everyone is forced to run away again. The group stops though and they are eventually able to get rid of the water. However, more water comes out of the surrounding rooms and the group quickly runs back to the elevator. Ichigo tells Sado to take Uryū and go on ahead and Sado does so while Ichigo and Renji stay behind to fight. Orihime, Rukia, and the mod-souls enter as well, and once they reach the bottom floor they quickly head out. However, the group stands in shock when they see it raining outside. Ichigo and Renji eventually appear to the group again and they're also shocked from seeing the rain.[20]
Hō and Ban then reappear again and they decide to finish things up by combining the both of their dolls. Ichigo orders Sado and Orihime to take Uryū and get away from here, and he begins attacking the water. They begin to run away but they stop when they see Ichigo, Renji, and Rukia in trouble. Uryū tells Sado to leave him behind since he doesn't want to put them all in trouble, but Ichigo tells him to be quiet and tells the three of them to run away already. Orihime tries to object, but Sado tells her that Ichigo is correct and that he'll be okay. He states that their objective right now should be to just protect Uryū, and Orihime reluctantly agrees. They then begin running away again. As they run, Sado tells Orihime that they have to get out of this rain and they decide to head to a nearby factory. However, they are soon stopped by a large ball of water.[21]
The water begins attacking them and Sado accidently drops Uryū, but before the water can attack Uryū Orihime appears and protects him with Santen Kesshun. However, the water breaks through Orihime's shield, and Hō and Ban inform them that they can't escape. Sado tells Noba and Kurōdo to protect Uryū and Sado activates his armored arm. Sado fires off a blast of spiritual energy at the water but it is unable to do any damage to it. Hō and Ban then send their doll after them and Sado continues attacking, but to no avail. Sado then attacks the two Bount much to their surprise, and they quickly move away from the attack. As Hō tells Ban that they have to stick together, Sado hits Hō with a blast of spiritual energy, and the water goes away because of this. Sado and the others then use this opportunity to quickly escape.[21]
Sado and the others arrive at the factory, but Kurōdo points out that water is in here because the place is leaking. Sado simply apologizes and it's pointed out that it's better then being outside. Orihime notices that Uryū's fever is getting worse and Sado remarks that this isn't good. Hō and Ban suddenly reappear to take Uryū and they send water after the group. Uryū is grabbed by the water, and Sado tries to save him, but Hō and Ban tell him not to. They then begin strangling Uryū with the water as a demonstration to show what will happen if they intervene. As Sado wonders what to do, Ichigo and the others enter the room, and Hō and Ban decide to get serious. They have their water get on top of Sado's and everyone else's faces, and then have the water enter into their mouths and noses. This ends up causing the bodies of Sado and the others to be slowly teared apart from the inside out. However, they are soon saved by Noba who uses his powers to teleport the two Bount away from each other. Ichigo then saves Uryū and Sado holds onto him again. Hō tries to attack the group by himself, and he is successful for a bit until Ganju and Hanatarō arrive, and Ganju destroys the water with a firework. Because of the dolls defeat, the two Bount are destroyed as well.[21]
Ururu saves Sado

When the war against the Bounts starts, Sado forms part of the group which aims to defeat them. He is paired with the mod soul Noba to seek out and destroy the Bounts. He encounters Sawatari and fights him along with Rangiku Matsumoto, Noba, and Ururu Tsumugiya. The battle ends undecided.
After the Bounts invade Soul Society, Sado meets up with Ichigo to fight Jin Kariya. However, the fight doesn't last very long, as their battle reveals the massive energy source Jōkaishō, which Kariya absorbs and uses its potential destructive power as a threat to keep them at bay.

Arrancar arcEdit Arrancar arc sectionEdit

After returning from Soul Society (for a second time in the anime) Sado's life returns to normal. He is first seen back in school along with Orihime and Ishida. He says hi to Ichigo and Keigo is confused as to why they're all friends.[22] Later when Ichigo's Substitute Shinigami Badge goes off Sado asks if it's a Hollow. Ichigo leaves school to fight the Hollow and Sado follows along with Orihime with the excuse that they have to go to the bathroom.[23]
Ichigo defeats the Hollow easily and he tells Sado and Orihime that they didn't need to come. Ichigo then asks why Ishida didn't come and Sado notes that he's more concerned about Ishida not showing up when he wants him to. Orihime says that Ishida isn't doing well and Ichigo asks Sado if he noticed anything and he says no. Orihime then states that he doesn't want Ichigo to know things like this and Ichigo points out that she shouldn't have said anything then. Orihime is worried about this and Ichigo says they'll just pretend they didn't hear anything.[24]
Sado is later shown in class again and when Ichigo's Substitute Shinigami Badge goes off again and he leaves, Sado tells the new transfer student, Shinji Hirako, that that's just how Ichigo is. Shinji tells him that he pretty much expected him to be that way.[25]
After school is over Sado is shown walking around the streets at night.[26]
When Ichigo drags Shinji out of class Sado is shown with a serious look on his face.[27]
Sado and Orihime later interrupt a fight between Shinji and a young girl. The young girl notices them and gets mad at Shinji for getting followed. Orihime asks Shinji what he wants with Ichigo and the young girl tells her that they won't say anything.[28] The young girl then introduces herself as Hiyori Sarugaki and she tells them to introduce themselves as well. They do and Hiyori points out that their names mean princess and tiger and is jealous since their names mean Monkey and Hira. Shinji gets mad that he's the only one who doesn't get to be a living thing and tells her not to include him if it doesn't make sense, and Hiyori responds by hitting him. Hiyori then states that she's going to kill them and Shinji grabs her and runs away. Orihime attempts to go after them but Sado stops her stating they would never be able to catch up to them with their speed and even if they did they would get killed anyway.[29]
Sado and Orihime later sense an enormous spiritual pressure around the area.[30]They run to where it's coming from and Orihime attempts to help someone on the ground but Sado notes that the person is already dead and that the people around them have had their spirits pulled out of their bodies. Sado then asks Orihime that if there are any survivors that she should save and run away. Orihime notes that he'll be alone but Sado tells her she has to do this since he can't heal anyone.[31]
Sado arrives and blocks a kick that was meant for Tatsuki from a giant Arrancar named Yammy. Sado thinks to himself that this is too dangerous for Orihime and tells her to run away with Tatsuki. Yammy yells at another Arrancar named Ulquiorra and asks if he's "the one". Ulquiorra states that he's trash and Yammy attacks Sado causing his armored arm to break in half. Sado then falls down unconscious.[32]
Ichigo stops Di Roy Rinker from killing Sado.

Arrancar109Added by Arrancar109
Sado is later shown looking out of a window and healing from his injuries.[33] He decides to get up and leave but a nurse tries to stop him since his treatment isn't done yet. He leaves anyway and is immediately confronted by a lone Arrancar called Di Roy Rinker. He goes to stab Sado's chest claiming that he has lost but Ichigo grabs his arm and tells him that the winner is determined after the actual battle.[34] Sado realizes that he would have died if Ichigo was even a second slower and Ichigo tells him to run away. He does so and as he's running Rukia spots him and is glad to see he's okay, but Sado simply runs past her and thinks to himself that he'll never be able to help Ichigo anymore.[35]
Sado goes to the Urahara Shop and begs Kisuke Urahara to train him when he realizes he is too weak to protect anyone. Urahara initially refuses but then decides to have him fight against Renji Abarai and has Renji continually use his Bankai against him.[36]

Upon their arrival, Uryū and Sado engage two Arrancar named Aisslinger Wernarr and Demoura Zodd, telling Ichigo to watch them. Sado is finally able to keep up with the Arrancar and begins giving Gantenbainne a beating. Gantenbainne however releases his Zanpakutō and thinking he has the upper hand attacks Sado with a huge energy blast. Sado however reveals the true armor form of his left arm, calling it Brazo Izquierda del Diablo and easily blocks it.[39] With his true powers finally awoken, he easily beats Gantenbainne with a new attack, "La Muerte", in turn also crushing the armor of his release form. He thanks Gantenbainne for helping him grasp his power by fighting with his full strength and decides to spare him. His victory is short-lived, however, as the 5th Espada, Nnoitra Gilga, severely wounds him and leaves him for dead.[40] To Nnoitra's surprise however, Sado manages to get back up, gravely wounded, and attempts another attack but he collapses after being stopped by Nnoitra's Fracción, Tesra Lindocruz.[41]
Sado and Gantenbainne are eventually found by the Exequias, who plan to finish them off, but Retsu Unohana and Isane Kotetsu interrupt. He later attacks the Exequias who are fighting Ichigo along with Renji and Rukia.

The group look at an enraged Yammy, who Sado says is a lot bigger than when they last met. The group then judges that Yammy is the 10th Espada. Upon noticing this, Renji tells them that together they can defeat him because he is #10, but upon hearing this Yammy decides to release his Zanpakutō. Sado, Rukia, and Renji realize in shock that Yammy's number changed into #0. Now transformed into a giant monster, Yammy says that the ten Espada are ranked from 0-9 and introduces himself to them as Espada Zero, Yammy Llargo. Sado is led to Xcution by Riruka Dokugamine. As she complains about having to find Sado, she begins to get annoyed at Sado for not speaking. Sado simply remarks that he is amazed that Riruka could talk for so long, and Riruka begins to get more annoyed.[49] Sado eventually reaches Xcution but when he gets there he immediately spots a shocked Ichigo sitting in front of him.[50] Chad is just as surprised to see Ichigo there but does not respond to Ichigo's questions. Kūgo asks them both to sit quietly as he explains things. He says every Xcution member had their mothers attacked by Hollows while they were in the womb, leaving traces of their powers which were then passed to the children as they were born. The members of Xcution wish their powers gone and have discovered that they can erase them by transferring them onto a Shinigami-Human hybrid. He says Chad also has Fullbring powers and has agreed to help restore Ichigo's powers. Ichigo asks Chad if that's true and he approves it, saying he hasn't been able to look at Ichigo since the latter lost his powers. He tells Ichigo not to try and hide his passion to fight for others' protection. After hearing this, Ichigo agrees to help.[51]
When Sado returns to the hideout with some shopping, Giriko thanks him. He asks what the box on the table is and Jackie tells him that it is Riruka's doll house, inside which Ichigo is doing his Fullbring training. He is stunned by this and Riruka tells him that it is better to start quickly. She asks if he is going to join in the complaints against her way of doing things. Sado removes the roof of the house and tells Ichigo to that his substitute Shinigami badge is the best thing he can think of to use for Fullbring.[52]

Uryū attends the live broadcast of Don Kanonji's TV program in Karakura Town. When Kanonji attempts to exorcise an earth-bound Plus by placing his staff inside the partially open hole in its chest, Uryū is about to intervene when Ichigo vaults the barrier.[8][9] Uryū is later seen walking down a street and staring at Ichigo Kurosaki in his Shinigami form.[10] He saves a Plus from a Hollow and goes to a location where he can see the Plus. He then spots Ichigo again as Ichigo performs a Soul Burial on the Plus.[11] Later in school, he is again seen near Ichigo, who is dragged off by Rukia Kuchiki to defeat a Hollow. However, Uryū defeats this Hollow before them, and when Rukia and Ichigo get there they begin arguing with each other. Uryū approaches them and states that a Hollow is here - just before Rukia gets a message signaling that a Hollow has arrived. After Ichigo asks Rukia which way the Hollow is, Uryū mocks him for not being able to sense something as simple as that and tells him he should not even call himself a Shinigami. Uryū then uses his Quincy bow, Kojaku, and shoots an arrow from it, killing the Hollow. Ichigo asks him what he is and Uryū introduces himself, stating that he is a Quincy and that he hates Shinigami.[12] Ichigo is confused by this statement and Uryū tells him that he hates him for being a Shinigami.[13]
Uryū easily fixes a stuffed toy.
Uryū is later seen in his classroom, and as he tries to leave, a girl named Michiru Ogawa hands him a ripped doll to fix. He then takes a sewing set out and easily (but with great drama) repairs the broken doll. As he heads home, he spots Ichigo following him. He mocks Ichigo for not being able to hide his spiritual pressure and for his inability to sense others with high spiritual pressure. He then tells Ichigo that since the day he entered school, he knew of his high spiritual pressure, that he knew when he became a Shinigami and even knows Rukia's true identity. Uryū then draws out something called Reiraku and states that it is something that compresses and visualizes the spiritual aura in the atmosphere. He again mocks Ichigo's ignorance, and, grabbing hold of Ichigo's Reiraku, points out that those of Shinigami are colored red. He then tells him that he is a Quincy and that he holds the power to kill Hollows, and asks Ichigo to fight him to show the difference in their strength.[14] Ichigo tells him the idea of competing against him is stupid, as he has nothing to do with his grudge against the Shinigami. However, Uryū is able to provoke him by stating that he is only a temporary Shinigami who cannot even do anything without Rukia around.[15] Ichigo tells him that he will give this competition a shot and goes into his Shinigami form, with Kon going into his Human body. He then asks Uryū for the rules of this fight. Uryū takes some Hollow bait out and states that he is going to bring Hollows into the town, and that whoever kills the most Hollows within twenty-four hours is the winner. However, Ichigo protests against this idea as the people in town will be put in danger, but Uryū tells him that caring for others is unnecessary and that either way he should be confident enough to save them all.[16]
Uryū grabbing Ichigo's red spirit thread.
Hollows begin breaking into Karakura Town and Uryū shoots the first one down. As he is doing this though Ichigo grabs him and tells him to bring the town back to normal. However, Uryū states that it is too late and that instead of focusing on him he should be focusing on the Hollows so he can save as many people as possible. He then tells him that Hollows have a tendency to go after people with high spiritual pressure and Ichigo realizes his family is in danger. He immediately runs off to save his family, missing what Uryū tries to tell him as he leaves. [17] Uryū begins shooting Hollows from the high vantage point of a bridge, reaching up to eleven kills.[18] After killing more and more Hollows, Uryū's shots begin to get weaker and he realizes that the numbers should not be this high. He decides not to complain though and remembers his mentor, telling him he has not made any mistakes and that he will avenge him.[19]
Uryū then encounters both Rukia and Kon after Kon rescues Rukia from a weak Hollow. Uryū comments on their current location being safe which prompts Kon to question him, saying that it is because of Uryū starting the fight that the town is danger. He addresses Kon, admitting that while he did start the fight, he will not allow anyone in the town to die even if Ichigo dies. Suddenly the weak Hollow returns to attack. As Uryū is about to shoot the Hollow, only for it to be swiftly killed by Ichigo as he arrives at the scene[20].
Ichigo starts arguing with Kon while Uryū looks on. Irritated that they will not stop arguing, Uryū fires an arrow at Ichigo, who blocks it. Ichigo then insists that it is a battle between him and Uryū, and that the amount of Hollows they beat is irrelevant. Before Uryū can respond, Kon points out that there is a large crack forming in the sky, and Uryū notes that the Hollows are converging upon it. Uryū begins to fire arrows into the group of Hollows and charges towards the Hollows, shouting that the last Quincy will be their opponent.[21].

Ichigo learns about the fall of the Quincy at the hands of the Shinigami[22], he runs after Uryū and attacks several Hollows around him. Ichigo tells him that he does not know or care about whether the Shinigami or Quincy were right and expresses his frustration at Uryū's methods, but is interrupted by him. Uryū tells him that he thought the Shinigami were correct, until his sensei was killed in front of him.[23] Uryū tells Ichigo of his sensei's attempts to convince the Shinigami to work together with the remaining Quincy, but he died fighting a group of Huge Hollows without achieving that goal. Uryū says that he must prove the strength of the Quincy to the Shinigami. Ichigo points out that his sensei's wish was to work together, not to prove the Quincy's strength and asks if he will do that now, saying that fighting back to back is the best way to deal with the situation.[24]

As Uryū dismisses the idea as nonsense, Ichigo attacks a Hollow that had come up behind Uryū, who kills another Hollow. Uryū insists that he is not cooperating, but that he simply had to kill it or else he would have been killed. Ichigo tells him that that is good enough. Ichigo states his own reluctance to work with Uryū, and asks him if he will cooperate. Uryū kills another Hollow in reply. The pair agree to beat each other up after the Hollows have been dealt with, but as they are about to attack the horde of Hollows,a Menos Grande rips apart the sky. After they argue about how to deal with the Hollows and the Menos, Ururu Tsumugiya, Tessai Tsukabishi, Jinta Hanakari, and Urahara arrive to fight the Hollows.[25] Uryū's attention is then turned to the emerging Menos Grande. Ichigo tells Uryū that there is no way they can figure out how to fight such a monster and that they will have to simply cut it repeatedly until it succumbs to its injuries. He charges towards the Menos, calling for Uryū to accompany him despite Uryū request for him to wait.[26] Uryū fires an arrow at the Menos' neck but does little damage, confirming his self thoughts on how he will not be able to do much damage. He then checks on Ichigo's status and asks what was he thinking. In response to Uryū's questions, Ichigo tells him that he is alright and that he thought he could cut its feet off and work his way up to the head and kill it that way. Uryū complains about his way of thinking and places his hand on Ichigo's Zanpakutō. [27] Uryū notices that Ichigo's power is flowing into his bow. Thinking about the differences between the fighting styles of the Quincy and Shinigami, Uryū comes up with an idea to make use of Ichigo's large amount of power. As Ichigo is shocked to see the increased size of Uryū's bow and asks what happened to it, Uryū tells him his idea.[28]

With Ichigo's Zanpakutō tied to his head, Uryū instructs a dubious Ichigo to increase his power to its maximum so that he can shoot an extremely large arrow at the Menos Grande. Ichigo points out that he never controls his energy output and that if people say that his power is great then it must be at maximum all the time. When the Menos starts to charge a Cero, Uryū calls for Ichigo to connect his Zanpakutō to his body again but is surprised to find Ichigo rushing towards the Menos. Ichigo blocks the Cero with his Zanpakutō and Uryū notes that Ichigo's power increases as he resists the Cero. Ichigo repels the attack, injuring the Menos in the process.[29] As the Menos retreats from the Human World, Ichigo yells "Victory" and asks Uryū whether he is going to thank him for his help before collapsing. Uryū notices how Ichigo's Zanpakutō begins to lose its form. The energy released from Ichigo and his Zanpakutō causes Uryū's bow to grow again. Noting that it will explode, Uryū begins to fire arrows into the sky to release the excess power and to stabilize Ichigo, injuring himself. Ichigo tells him not to over do it, as he will lose his arm. Uryū tells him to make sure that he lives so that they he can beat him later. Uryū realizes his mistake for misunderstanding his sensei and for being so useless, asking to be forgiven for his mistake.[30]

When Uryū returns to school the next day, his injuries attracts attention of his classmates. Later Ichigo invites Uryū to join his group for lunch. He initially refuses but changes his mind upon hearing that Keigo Asano will treat them. The atmosphere turns out to be very tense. Uryū asks why Ichigo invited him, questioning Ichigo's motives. The two then start mildly bickering with each other.[31] Later, Uryū intervenes when Rukia is confronted by Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki from Soul Society.[32] Uryū is quickly surprised by Renji who asks who he is. Uryū then decides to give his name so that Renji can know who defeated him.[33] Unfortunately, Uryū fails and is badly injured by Renji. Renji then gives his name as he is about kill Uryū only to be stopped by Ichigo.[34] After they return to Soul Society with Rukia, Uryū is treated on the spot by Urahara. Before leaving, he expresses his concern for Ichigo and tells Urahara to please heal him. He realizes that he is not as strong as he thought he was as he comes to believe that the only one who can save Rukia is Ichigo.[35]

Sado, Orihime, and Yoruichi try to recruit Uryū.
YypAdded by Yyp
Wanting to go and save Rukia, Uryū trains to better equip himself for the next time he needs to battle a Shinigami. He goes to a secluded spot by a waterfall to do so. However, he is found by Yasutora Sado, Orihime Inoue, and Yoruichi Shihōin. He learns from Orihime that both she and Sado are going to take lessons to be able to go to Soul Society. She asks him if he would want to join them. He asks who would their master be to train them. Uryū is utterly surprised to find that their master is a talking cat. He then regains his composure and apologizes for his rudeness. Yoruichi accepts his apology and insults Uryū for making a fuss over a talking cat. Orihime affirms again on how a talking cat is not a big deal and again encourages Uryū to take Yoruichi's lessons, believing that he also wants to rescue Rukia. Uryū, however declines her offer. Orihime wonders why, pointing out that she and Sado were only able to find Uryū because of Yoruichi's ability to sense reiatsu. Uryū explains, saying that the issue is not that he does not have faith in Yoruichi's abilities but that he has to train alone. He then lies saying he had never thought of actually rescuing Rukia but was only training as he could not forgive himself for losing to the Shinigami. Thinking that there is no point in dealing with someone with no desire to go to Soul Society, Yoruichi beckons both Sado and Orihime to leave, and the three of them take their leave. Uryū then quietly mutters an apology to Orihime, stating that his training cannot be seen by anyone. He then opens the box he had carried, which contains the Sanrei Glove.[36]
Uryū is freed from the Kōryū by Sado.

In a week's time he is able to master the Sanrei Glove[37]. He joins Ichigo and the rest of a rescue team in going to Soul Society. Hearing Sado's comment on how he thinks Uryū might not come, he retorts back on how he needed to train because of his defeat against the Shinigami and will go anywhere to win. He also addresses Ichigo, telling him that he wants him to see how strong he has become. Ichigo, however simply notes that he is astounded Uryū would come all the way in such a "weird" outfit which Uryū takes offense to. Urahara then brings them all in to explain how to get to Soul Society.[38] After hearing Urahara's explanation, they follow Yoruichi and rush through the Senkaimon.[39] Uryū is almost dragged in by the Kōryū before being saved by Sado while in the Dangai Precipice World and everyone is almost caught by Kōtotsu. They are able to get through to Soul Society intact around the Rukongai but with a rough landing. Uryū notes his disappointment at having to use his backup cape so soon. As they survey their surroundings, Ichigo foolishly rushes towards Seireitei. He is soon stopped by activation of the entrance's Sekkiseki walls and the arrival of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka. [40]

Uryū questions who the large guardian is, to which Yoruichi answers him.[41] He is surprised at just how powerful Jidanbō is when he swings his axe down and stops both Sado and Orihime by creating a wall from the ground. He then begins arguing with Ichigo about Ichigo's decision to fight Jidanbō one-on-one. [42]Uryū watches Ichigo's fight against Jidanbō and is surprised when the latter is defeated. Jidanbō grants Ichigo and his friends permission to pass through the gate. Uryū questions this, to which Jidanbō reassures him, telling him he will let them through because Uryū's "boss" defeated him. Uryū quickly gets agitated by Jidanbō's comment, pointing out that Ichigo is not his leader. Although Jidanbō opens the gate, Uryū and the others cannot advance due to the arrival of Gin Ichimaru.[43] They soon decide to try to get in another way. And so Yoruichi decides that they should go to Kūkaku Shiba. The group also encounters Ganju Shiba who picks a fight with Ichigo.[44] Their fight is inconclusive as Ganju quickly leaves. Ichigo vents his frustration and Uryū tells him to calm down, thinking that Ichigo shares his same surprise at Ganju's gang. The next day, Uryū has to contend with a stubborn Ichigo who refuses to leave because he wants to wait and finish his fight with Ganju. Upon arriving at Kūkaku's home, both he and Ichigo are utterly shocked at how outrageous Kūkaku's house stands out. He and the others are further surprised to learn that Kūkaku is a woman[45] Kūkaku reveals that she is specializes in fireworks and that the plan is to launch them into the Seireitei through a spirit cannon.[46]. Although Uryū questions the safety of such a plan, Kūkaku simply explains that they will be using a special spiritual orb that they will use to create a reiatsu shell around them so that they can break past the barrier and the walls of Sekkiseki that protect the Seireitei, and sends them to the training room[47] Their training goes relatively well with Uryū successfully forming an ellipsoid sphere.[48]. Afterward, they prepare to launch themselves.[49] They manage to break through into Seireitei, [50] but the group is separated as the cannonball disperses. Uryū is sent flying away with Orihime after Sado suddenly moves him to Orihime before the influx sends Sado flying out. Orihime stops their fall using Santen Kesshun. [51]

Uryū and Orihime decide to sneak around to avoid detection. As they are doing so, they see Kenpachi Zaraki and watch on as they hide on top of a building. When Zaraki moves on, they come out and discuss on where to go next. As Orihime is pointing out their next possible destination, Jirōbō Ikkanzaka of the 7th Division almost kills her. However Uryū notices this and saves her.[52] After a short battle, Uryū dispatches him fairly easily.[53][54] Orihime then gets the idea to steal a pair of Shinigami uniforms to blend in. When two possible candidates from the 12th Division show up, Uryū merely watches as Orihime takes them down single-handedly. Their disguises work fairly well as they are able to avoid detection.[55]As they search for Ichigo, they soon encounter Makizō Aramaki of the 11th Division. They are interrogated by him, who asks them for the division to which they belong. Uryū and Orihime answer that they are from the 11th Division but Aramaki, unable to recognize them, checks Orihime's uniform. He becomes suspicious, asking them why they are wearing 12th Division uniforms and why were they walking without their Zanpakutōs. Aramaki, however is knocked out by members of the 12th Division who claim that they have to protect those in the same divisions. As Orihime talks with these 12th Division members, Uryū realizes how strange it is for them to rescue the pair as Aramaki's reasoning did make sense. He then rushes to get Orihime away as the 12th Division members are blown up by Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who tries to capture Uryū and Orihime by using his own squad members as bombs.[56]

Although Orihime is sad for the deaths for the 12th Division members, Uryū tries to comfort her and turns his sights on Mayuri, who is now interested in studying Orihime because of her shield. Uryū then suddenly moves next to Mayuri, pointing a bow but is noticed by Mayuri who tells him that he is pretty fast for a Quincy. Mayuri then states that they are a rare breed and he has not seen one alive for many years, but he notes that he has no interest in the Quincy as he finished studying their kind some time ago. When this causes Uryū to question who he is, Mayuri is taken aback at the idea that Uryū and his friends would invade Soul Society without doing their research about their enemy. Mayuri then gives his name, rank, and position. Uryū, realizing what they are up against, tells Orihime to run for it as he takes on Mayuri. Orihime refuses so Uryū forces Makizō Aramaki of the 11th Division, to carry her away from harms way. Not about to lose a test subject, Mayuri extends his arm to catch Orihime but it is shot off by one of Uryū's spiritual arrows.[57]

Mayuri uses his own lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi, to disable Uryū long enough to land a hit on Uryū with his Shikai, which paralyzes Uryū's arm.[58] Uryū is angered by Mayuri's callous disregard for his own lieutenant. Mayuri reveals that he created Nemu and mocks his sympathy as part of the meaningless "Quincy pride" they speak about until their last breath. He recalls the last Quincy he researched who kept on calling out the name of his student and shows Uryū a photograph, which depicts his own grandfather. Uryū states that he is thankful that Orihime is not there to witness their fight, swearing on "Quincy pride" that he would kill Mayuri.[59] Driven by anger at Mayuri, Uryū uses "Ransōtengai" to move his paralyzed body and removes his Sanrei glove, invoking the "Quincy: Letzt Stil", greatly increasing his Quincy powers at the cost of losing them shortly thereafter.[60] Though more than powerful enough to defeat Mayuri in this form, Uryū is ultimately unsuccessful. After Mayuri uses his Bankai to poison Uryū, earning an arrow through the chest in return, he escapes by reducing himself to a liquid state.[61]

Uryū realizes that he is going to die due to Mayuri's poison until Nemu calls out for him. She tells him that behind her Lieutenant insignia there is an antidote hidden. Kneeling down next to her, Uryū finds it and tells her to drink first, to which Nemu says that she is made in the same way as Mayuri and is unaffected by the poison. Uryū then questions her intentions, but as she explains that he is already dying and that it is in gratitude for not shooting her creator and father in the head, which would have been fatal. Uryū says that he intended to kill him, claiming that he missed and takes the antidote. Leaving Nemu, he finds his way up the stairs to the Shrine of Penitence and feeling pain, Uryū realizes that he has truly lost his Quincy powers as his grandfather had warned him that would happen. He is then confronted by Kaname Tōsen, who uses his Shikai to render Uryū unconscious.[62]
Uryū is placed in a holding cell and healed by the 4th Division, where he finds himself with Ganju Shiba and Chad. After a short argument with Ganju, Uryū decides it would be best to wait for either Ichigo or Orihime to free them.[63] They are, however, freed by Kenpachi Zaraki and reunited with Orihime.[64] Kenpachi's lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi, leads the group to the execution stands[65], where they wait as Ichigo and Byakuya fight.[66] After Byakuya is defeated, the group tends to Ichigo.[67] They later learn of the elaborate conspiracy surrounding Rukia's execution, masterminded by Sōsuke Aizen.[68]
After Aizen escapes to Hueco Mundo, Uryū, Chad, Ichigo, and Orihime depart for the living world during which Uryū sews clothes for Chad, Orihime, and Rukia.[69] When Uryū departs for his house, he reminds Ichigo that they are still enemies.[70]

With his Quincy powers gone, Uryū is of little use during the initial stages of the Bount invasion. He accompanies Ichigo and the others from battle to battle, but is unable to make any major contributions. He is rescued and befriended by the Bount Yoshino Sōma, who rebelled against the other Bounts. According to Uryū, Yoshino reminded him of his mother and he develops a close relationship with the former despite the brief amount of time they have together. Uryū falls into a depression after Yoshino is sacrificed and becomes the Bitto, but finally snaps out of it after Nemu pays him a visit to give him the Quincy Bangle. Needing access to his former abilities in order to help his friends, Uryū strikes a deal with Mayuri; if Uryū lets the Bount into Soul Society, Mayuri will briefly restore his Quincy powers. Uryū complies, giving the Bount access to the Soul Society, and receives a Quincy artifact for his troubles: The Quincy Bangle. Though inexperienced with it, Uryū is able to use the artifact to kill Yoshi, reaching his and the artifact's limit by doing so. He later assists Ran'Tao in her battle with Jin Kariya, gaining the upper hand on Jin for a moment. However, Ran'Tao's life is put at risk, and through saving her, the Quincy Bangle is destroyed. Once Kariya and the remaining Bount are defeated, Uryū returns home.

Disappointed by Uryū's weakness, Ryūken offers to restore his Quincy powers on the condition that Uryū never associate with Shinigami again.[72] Uryū agrees and trains with his father in Karakura Hospital's secret training ground whilst Arrancar continue to attack Karakura Town. Before the third Arrancar Invasion begins, Uryū regains his powers, ending his training.[73]

Lia SchifferAdded by Lia Schiffer
After learning that Orihime had been captured by the Arrancar, Uryū joins Ichigo and the others to organize a rescue team to save her.[74] Because Soul Society has abandoned Orihime, Ichigo is technically not acting as a Shinigami, giving Uryū a loophole with which to accompany them.[75] As Ichigo, Chad, and Uryū enter Hueco Mundo, they are immediately detected by Aizen and attacked by two Arrancar, Demoura Zodd and Aisslinger Wernarr. Ichigo is then told to stay back and simply watch as Chad and Uryū engage the two Arrancar by themselves. Once they are victorious, the room and passageway collapses around them, forcing the trio to race outside where they see their destination, a castle in the middle of a barren desert.[76][77][78]
They encounter a child-looking Arrancar named Nel Tu accompanied by Dondochakka Birstanne, Pesche Guatiche, and their pet Bawabawa who decided to join them[79]. The group is then attacked by a sand-based Hollow, Runuganga. The Hollow is immune to their attacks, but the group is saved by Renji and Rukia, the latter of which freezes Runuganga in a circle of ice.[80]

Seeing Uryū is in a bad situation, Pesche intends to try and help him but quickly realizes he will be no match for Cirucci. Cirucci notices Pesche as she is about to launch a finishing blow at Uryū, and subsequently lunches the attack against him.[83] Though Pesche continues to annoy Uryū, he proves invaluable in defeating Cirucci Sanderwicci with Uryū, who activates his Seele Schneider.[84] The Privaron Espada is easily defeated, but Uryū decides to spare her.[85]

Just as their last hope of winning fades, Mayuri arrives to fight Szayel.[93] He reveals that during their time at Soul Society, he planted bacteria upon Uryū's person to monitor his action, much to Uryū's chagrin. Uryū and Renji watch the battle between the two scientists and witness Mayuri's ultimate victory upon Szayel. He then asks Mayuri if he is okay, as his Zanpakutō was broken, to which Mayuri responds that it is a suitable punishment for defying its master. [94]
When Mayuri opens Szayel's specimen vault, a shocked Uryū sees two bodies hanging from the ceiling.[95] Not long afterwards, Uryū strongly opposes Mayuri's method of healing him by injecting a green liquid into him (while being restrained by Nemu). Nemu silences him by lowering her breasts onto his face causing him to pass out.[96]

Uryū arrives to the fifth tower, where Ichigo and Ulquiorra are fighting, just in time to protect Orihime from Yammy Llargo and knock him down with one of his arrows though, he notes that the arrow did not pierce him. When Yammy tries to retaliate, a landmine Uryū uses (which was developed by Mayuri, specifically designed for Arrancar) explodes and heavily injures him. [97] However, Yammy is not dead yet, and is barely hanging on to the crumbling floor. Uryū tells him it is too bad the Espada ran into him, as he could have fought a little longer. He then says "Mala Suerte" (bad luck) as he shoots an arrow into Yammy, making him fall through every floor of Las Noches since Uryū broke all the pillars on the way up. Uryū then takes over protecting Orihime as Ichigo continues to finish his fight with Ulquiorra. [98] Elsewhere, Uryū saved Loly by shooting her onto the side of the tower.

Shortly after Ulquiorra attacks Ichigo with his Cero Oscuras, Orihime asks Uryū to take her above Las Noches' dome, to which Uryū reluctantly agrees.[99] He then takes Orihime up to the top of the dome using the same method of Hirenkyaku as he did while passing through the Garganta. He comments that the reiatsu above the dome (Ulquiorra's) is so strong it does not feel like normal reiatsu at all, as if there is an ocean in the sky.[100] They arrive just in time to see Ulquiorra send a point blank Cero Oscuras through Ichigo's chest, seemingly killing him. [101] In order to buy Orihime time to heal Ichigo, Uryū faces off against Ulquiorra and uses his Licht Regen technique. It has no effect, to which Ulquiorra remarks how he thought Uryū was the calmest of all Ichigo's friends. Uryū states that he is fighting him because he is calm. During his fight with the Espada he suffers great injuries, including the loss of his left hand. However, Uryū had already applied anesthesia and stopped the bleeding from his injury. Telling Orihime to focus on Ichigo, Uryū draws out a Seele Schneider and continues to fight. Ulquiorra shoots him with a variation of Cero to knock him out, and Orihime panics. What they both fail to notice is that the seemingly dead Ichigo is moving, and his hair is extending into a mane.[102]

During their battle, Uryū, Orihime, and Ulquiorra notice Ichigo has risen and appears in a new form.[103] Ulquiorra turns his attention towards Ichigo and begins to fight him. When Ichigo goes to finish Ulquiorra off after surviving a close range Cero, Uryū stops him saying that there is no need to carve up his corpse, since he has already won. Hollow Ichigo then stabs him in the abdomen with Zangetsu, revealing that he was willing to attack even his friend in this state. He then prepares a Cero to attack Uryū. [104] Ulquiorra then appears slightly regenerated and cuts off one of Ichigo's horns. A large explosion occurs over Ichigo's head, saving Uryū and restoring Ichigo to his normal state. When Ichigo comes to, he is horrified to see his sword lodged in Uryū's abdomen. Though Uryū is badly injured, he is clearly pleased to see his friend returned to normal, even smiling through his pain. [105] Ulquiorra was mortally wounded in the fight, and fades away into dust. With the battle against Ulquiorra over, Ichigo goes off to help their friends while Uryū stays behind with Orihime so she can heal his injuries.[106]
Uryū is later seen with Chad, Rukia, Renji, and Orihime in Karakura Town, his left hand restored but in bandages. When Ichigo suddenly collapses, Uryū is seen running with the rest of the group towards him.[107] Later, Uryū is in Ichigo's bedroom along with the rest of his friends as he wakes up. As Rukia explains Ichigo has been unconscious for a month and lost his spiritual powers, Uryū, along with Orihime and Chad witnesses Rukia and Ichigo's farewell before she disappears from his sight.[108]

Uryū and Chad begin to battle Muramasa and are almost able to successfully flank him, but Senbonzakura arrives to block the attack. As Uryū begins battling Senbonzakura, he launches several attacks that are consistently blocked by Senbonzakura. Uryū moves to avoid Senbonzakura's attack and is about to be hit by an attack of Muramasa that is then blocked by Orihime's Santen Kesshun. Rukia Kuchiki arrives, having followed her brother's reiatsu and fills them in on who Muramasa is. Uryū then asks why Muramasa was in the living world and then attempts to stop Muramasa from escaping but is once again intercepted by Senbonzakura. Uryū takes note of the energy being released from Muramasa's spell and is attacked by Senbonzakura but blocks with Seele Schneider. The two have a brief sword duel and as Senbonzakura attempts to finish Uryū off, he is surprised to see his reishi being absorbed. Making use of the extra reishi, Uryū successfully hits Senbonzakura. Uryū tries to go help Rukia but Senbonzakura still stands in his way.[110]
After the revived Kōga Kuchiki rejects Muramasa, he loses control of his powers and turns into a Hollow. Uryū uses his powers to stop more Hollows from merging with Muramasa and attempts to defeat Muramasa himself. Muramasa, however, proves too fast, easily evading Uryū's arrows. After Muramasa's second transformation starts attracting more Hollows, Uryū joins Sado in destroying them to prevent Muramasa's power from growing.[111] Fortunately, several Shinigami and their recently restored Zanpakutō spirits arrive to help. Suì-Fēng initially goes after the dome-like Muramasa, but Uryū stops her with a small barrage of intentionally-missed arrows, telling her that Ichigo is trapped inside. Later, the dome collapses. Uryū goes with his friends to investigate and finds Ichigo and a dying Muramasa. After Muramasa apologizes for his actions and dies, Ichigo says that Muramasa kept his pride as a Zanpakutō.[112]

Seventeen months later, Uryū has taken the position of being the main protector of Karakura Town against Hollow incursions, due to Zennosuke Kurumadani's unreliability. He runs out of the classroom telling the teacher he is on the way to the nurse's office as a cover.[113] When a gang from Miyakou searching for Ichigo block the gate to Karakura High School, Uryū tells them to stop what they are doing and leave. When one of them asks if he is Kurosaki, Uryū punches that person in anger, asking how he resembles Ichigo at all. He then says he will not allow them to leave anymore, believing not a single one of them will be able to.[114] After the fight ceases, Ichigo is kidnapped. Uryū, trying to figure out what just happened, runs into Orihime. They talk about Ichigo since they felt strange energy around him. Uryū tells her not to worry and it is probably nothing, but in his mind he thinks Ichigo is putting out something he has not in almost a year and a half, Reiatsu. [115] Later on that day, Uryū goes to Ichigo's house, where he notes that Orihime has gotten there first and is trying to find out if Ichigo knows anything about the strange feeling surrounding him, just he had planned to do. He decides to check if anything strange is happening in the town, but then senses a presence above. He looks up and sees a man walking atop the roof. Before he can ascertain who this stranger is, they disappear quickly. Uryū chases after him, noting that the stranger is fast and is using speed beyond that of a Human, as well as he cannot sense any spirit particles around him so he can determine what he is using to speed himself up. The stranger then instantly disappears due to a strange light. Before he can react, Uryū is attacked by the stranger.[116] Uryū is left lying on the street, having his right arm severely injured and bleeding profusely from the wound as the paramedics approach his location.[117]
Uryū is taken to Karakura Hospital, being operated on by his father. After the surgery, Orihime arrives to see him. When Ichigo arrives sometime after her, very worried, Uryū scolds him rather harshly for coming, attempting to protect him from getting involved. Ryūken enters the room shortly after and comments that Uryū talks too much. Uryū asks him if he is allowed to have visitors if they would have a bad effect on his wounds. Ryūken reminds him that he himself did the surgery and that his wounds would not worsen. He further comments that Uryū, who was cut down, should not be ordering around his doctor. Upon hearing Ryūken's words, Ichigo asks Uryū what had happened to him, and if he could not handle it himself, then he should have gotten help. Uryū says nothing in response, prompting Ryūken to state that sharing information is important and that he should not let his kindness go to waste. Uryū tells Ryūken to be quiet and asks for Orihime to go home. Orihime complies and leaves the room along with Ichigo and Ryūken.[118]
